Plastic-free pyramids

Plastic-free pyramids

Are Canton pyramid tea bags plastic free? YES.

Canton's pyramid tea bags have been and will always be plastic-free. The tea bags are made from a biodegradable plant-based material called Soilon which is derived from cornstarch and breaks down harmlessly.

The best way to dispose of them is in a council food waste bin as they take a long time to break down in a domestic compost heap. However, once in the council’s compost treatment cycle, they will break down into water, carbon dioxide and a little biomass within 8-12 weeks.

the misleading report

According to a BBC report of recent research undertaken in Canada, 'Some premium tea bags might be leaving billions of microscopic plastic particles in your cup'.

This study is referring to the very different type of pyramid tea bag made from Nylon. There are two types of 'premium tea bags', the cheaper kind made of Nylon (a form of plastic) and the ones called SOILON which we use at Canton. The SOILON bags are a biodegradable material made of cornstarch and are endorsed by the Soil Association.
